This week we want to spotlight another great volunteer! Ariana actually began as a virtual tutor in January and transitioned back to in person with us! She is a native Charlottean and graduated from North Carolina State University with degrees in Graphic Design and English. She has been practicing graphic/visual design for 13 years and is now pursuing a certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), with the hopes of tutoring abroad one day. Ariana gets to gain real-world experience teaching or tutoring students while at The Nest for her certification.  “The Nest Academy seemed most aligned with my goals, while also serving an important mission.” Ariana has also served at her church’s Summer Reading and Feeding program and with other summer programs related to design and creativity.

Ariana really enjoys working with different students. She believes each one has unique strengths and opportunities for improvement. “I really like moments when they grasp a concept, learn a new word or understand what they’ve read! When working in small groups, I love seeing the students help each other improve their reading and comprehension skills.” For Ariana, her experience has been very informative, especially since she is seeing how topics she studied in her course are applied in the classroom.

We have loved having Ariana volunteer with our students! She has helped them with their own writing pieces and passion and guided them in their class studies. In fact, Ariana is currently in a local writing program that’s helping her to write her first fantasy novel! More fun facts about Ariana are that she has a big sister, a dog niece and a pet betta fish. Thanks Ariana for all your time you have invested at The Nest!
